You Know How Much You Know When You Realize How Much You Don’t Know

You Know How Much You Know When You Realize How Much You Don’t Know.  Say that five times fast…Crazy isn’t it but I personally don’t think I have heard any statement in my life that holds so much truth as this one. “You know how much you know when you realize how much you don’t know.

Have you ever noticed that the individuals who don’t have as much knowledge tend to have more to say about their field? Or those who have a ton of knowledge tend to say less? Well, I certainly seen this time and time again in many circles of my life. Individuals who claim they possess specialized knowledge in a particular area not really having the foundation to base on what they’re saying. A con-master of sorts. In the martial arts industry, there are people who take declaration on certain expertise by taking one seminar and claiming to be a Master. Then they pass that knowledge on to their students when they have never truly learned it themselves. That is a Con-Master.

Back in 2008 when I was training for my 6th Degree Black Belt my good friend came to my house at 6:30 every morning and we practiced a series of techniques that were required for our advancement. Our techniques were steadily improving as we practiced the same moves over and over again. Then something amazing happened. As my techniques improved, a whole bunch of new realizations came to surface of what I needed to improve upon. This experience proved to be both frustrating and exciting. Frustrating because you realized how much more you needed to work on and exciting because I have something new to work towards. Those who feel they know it all are the ones who know a lot less then they realize. Those who know more are the ones that believe that they are only touching the surface of their field of expertise. That is what I personally learned from this training.

The Pyramid Theory

I believe that martial arts training or advancement in any venue is like a pyramid. You learn your techniques and climb up to the top of your own personal pyramid. Once you get to the top and feeling great at what you accomplished you zoom into the top of the pyramid to find yourself at the bottom of a new one. You then work your way up to the top of your new pyramid to zoom in again and again, you are the bottom of your next pyramid. Martial Arts training is a constant stream of endless pyramids that you continue to climb as your refine your physical, mental and spiritual skills. You may appear to be at the top of one but still at the bottom of the next.

For your Own Personal Business

How do you see yourself in your own business? Are you a student of your trade or do you know all that you need to know? To put it bluntly, are you a Con-Master or a life long Student? If someone was to ask my what my biggest role is as a professional Martial Artist at UMAC or Personal Development Coach at Empowered Mastery I would say, “To always be a student first”. It is that mindset that has helped me be on a quest for improvement in any venue that I am in. When you approach your Business and life with a “Student” mentality, success and improvement will be inevitable.

Here’s an action step for you, research and see if there is an industry specific workshop, seminar or anything that will help you advance in your own pyramid. Even if you don’t learn anything new you have the opportunity to network with others in your industry and bounce ideas off each other. It could also be a great confidence booster as you could see how well you are doing compared to others. Truth is, as long as you are learning and stay humble in the process, you are heading in the right direction.

Final thoughts…

Isn’t it fascinating that those who are always interested in personal development are typically the ones who are at the top of their game? Do you think that’s by accident? It is the most successful people who know that there is still so much to learn and are always on a personal quest for improvement. They know that there is so much more to know so they …”Know how much they know because they realized how much they don’t know.”
