Have you ever heard of EMOM?
Most of my favorite people in my life love to lift weights. My wife Kathy, my son Tim, partner and best friend’s Paul & Gina Melella, Craig Gustavson just to name a few. Me, I love being with them and know strength training is more important than ever as I get older. I will admit though, it confused the heck out of me until recently.
I didn’t understand what to do when I had to do ten reps of something, and then told to rest for the next 50 seconds during. EMOM training (Every minute on the minute) In my mind i was like, “Well what do I do now?”. I felt like I should be doing something and was being wasteful with my time. Ten seconds of action and 50 seconds of rest was something I have never done before in marital arts training or anything else. I would have always done it in reverse like 50 seconds of kicking hard and 10 second rest.
Just recently I understood it, like just this past week! I’m a slow dedicated learner. The 50 seconds is to rest and restore my energy to perform the next set and it takes all 50 seconds to do so. How did I realize this? Because I was thinking about the importance of work/life balance.
Did you know that high performers have the ability to accomplish in three hours what many do in a full day. Pretty amazing, right? How do they do that? Because they spend the rest of the time rejuvenating their mind so they could be more productive at go time. The rejuvenation is rest, exercise, reading, spending time with family and doing things that they enjoy. Because of this, they have the mental capacity to be hyper focused when it is time to do their work, they crush it! BTW, I am on more than three hours a day…lol
Isn’t that the same as doing 10 seconds of reps and 50 seconds of rest? I think so? My point is to make sure you time block the necessary time to do the things you enjoy so you could be more productive when it’s time to do your work, or fulfill your passion. (Hopefully its one in the same)
For those who have longer hours in their careers, It’s the same idea when you have a project or tasks to do. Allocate the time to hyper focus and surround it with more remedial tasks that require less mental energy. Remember, rejuvenation is as important, and at times more important, for your productivity.
