Turn your “Have to’s to “Get to’s”
If you are anything like me, you always have a lot going on. Being an entrepreneur that wears many hats, I always want to accomplish as much as possible in a week. Of course, I look to spend my time on my results driven activities which we call “focus” activities, however that’s not always the case. There are definite things in my life where hold the “Have to do”mentality. Basically, it means I am not really motivated to do it. So what I have adopted, and highly recommend, is to change the words, and it will change the meaning. So instead of saying “Have to” do something, I switch it to “Want to,” or better yet “Get to.”
For example, if you know me at all, you know I am a very dedicated martial artist and do my best to train every day to earn the right to uphold my rank. One part of my training that is very important to me, and enjoyable, is hiking. I very much love to do it and put it into my daily routine, but there are times when I just don’t want to. I may wake up tired, did not get a good sleep, or have a bunch of work to get done. Even today, as I write this, I did not want to go on my training hike today. I started thinking about it and saying to myself, oh no, I “Have to” do my hike. After a little bit of reflection and mental sparring, I re-worded the statement in my mind and said to myself, awesome, I “Get to” hike today.
You may be thinking that this is a silly example because I love hiking so much. The truth is, don’t discredit the fact that even though you may love to do something, you may not want to do it at times. Therefore, change your words, and it will change the meaning and turn your “Have to’s” into “Get to’s.” This little shift may be just enough to inspire you to be a little bit happier.
Happy living!
