Are you competitive or creative?
Competition is great! I love competition and striving to be the best I can. Even to the point where my brother and I would run a marathon and agree to stay together. Once both of us would see the finish line, no matter how tired we were, neither of us were going to let the other cross the finish line first. We would look at the results and one of us would be one second before the other. It was fun! That is a good kind of competition.
Where competition hurts us is when we are focused on the competition and not on our own growth. In business, I have always been slightly aware of what the competition does, but never to obsess over it. I believe that any energy I put to searching what they do is wasted.
That is why I choose to live on the creative plane. More energy goes to what I could do to provide the best value and experience for my student and clients. This is especially true as we navigate through the pandemic. The more energy we put to our own business the better off we will be. For many of us, it’s survival and we have to be 100% focused on making it through. Every business owner should do their best to eliminate distractions including putting energy to what others are doing.
Actually, I believe in these times, industries should band together to support each other. I am proud to say that many of us have done that in the Martial arts business.
I hope this helps you on this Tuesday and please stay true to your mission!
