If you could move it an inch, you could move it a mile.
In honor of this past Father’s Day, I thought I would share a story of the wisdom he instilled in me. When I was in my early 20’s, I was always working on my jeep. I’ve always loved Jeeps and this particular one was my favorite. It was a 1981 CJ7 with a custom painted fiberglass body and I was installing a refurbished 500 hp corvette motor in it.
The engine had just come back from the machine shop, and was on one side of the gravel driveway. It was in a crate with small wheels. The jeep was on the other side. If your with me in the description, you’ll see the problem. Small wheels with a very heavy engine does not role on gravel. With all of my effort, I move the engine one inch.
I see my father and tell him what’s going on. He confirmed, “Did you move it an inch?” I said yes and he said, “We’ll than you could move it a mile.”
Disgruntled, I went back and although it took me all day, I moved it the 20 feet to where the jeep was.
The lesson has still stuck with me 30 years later and I think about it when I am working towards my goals. Progress is progress, no matter how big or small it is. I know if I could move forward a little bit, I’ll eventually get to where I want to go.
Happy living!
