People are doing the best they can…at least I hope so.
Woah, did we have the trip from hell this past week. We were supposed to leave Friday at 8:00 pm to go to Las Vegas for my nephews wedding. We arrive at the airport cheery eyed and excited with anticipation to see my siblings, nephews and nieces and celebrate Jared and Brooke’s wedding.
First delay happened and we were delayed to 10:30 pm. No big deal, we were hanging at the AMEX lounge, which by the way is amazing! All was good until….
Text #3…the flight is delayed until 6:00 am the next morning. Ugh! Delta was selflessly going to give us a taxi voucher to take us home but we opted to get a hotel by the airport until….
Text # 4…flight is delayed to 11:00 am. Still not crazy bad cause we could just go back to the AMEX lounge. Guess what happened next…
Text # 5…Flight cancelled!
And they put us on a flight leaving at 6:30 pm! With a layover in Salt Lake City, and to arrive in Vegas at 11:21 pm…more than a full 24 hours after we were supposed to land originally.
Now, as challenging as it was for Kathy, Timmy and myself, it was a heck of a lot worse for the Delta reps who were trying to navigate through this. There were a lot of angry and frustrated folks and they were trying so hard to accommodate everyone. They were fielding hundreds of angry customers to see what could be done to make a bad situation better.
As patient as we were, and we were extremely understanding, it was still very frustrating. I kept on saying over and over to myself, “Everyone is doing the best they can under the circumstances.” As people around were getting angry, I even started saying it aloud. It probably didn’t make them feel better, but it did get the point across. And they were trying hard…I’m still waiting to see what they are going to do for restitution of taking over 24 hours of our lives.
What’s the lesson…in a situation where you can’t do anything about it, and there are people doing there best, be sure to acknowledge and empathize what they are experiencing, it may help you be a little more understanding, at least it did for me.
Oh, the other lesson…I may have to reconsider flying Delta to Vegas again. Crazy!
