Are your relationships reciprocal ?
I was having a conversation with Kathy over the weekend and we were talking about relationships. One of the things that came up was one sided relationships where one person contributes a lot and the other seems to just take. (No…it wasn’t between us..LOL). I thought about it more thinking about how I could do better with the relationships in my life.
What came to mind was “Earning the right” as I’ve talked often about with business. I believe whole heartedly and stress to our teams that we need to earn the right to be with our students, clients, etc. It’s just a great business practice. Well, through the conversation with Kathy, I am now also going to intentionally “earn the right” to have the relationships I have and make sure I am a contributor, not just a taker.
Please don’t mistake this for “You did something for me so I’ll do it for you”. What I’m thinking is completely the opposite. I am thinking of being kind, nice, thoughtful for the sake of doing so positively effecting their day. This way I am contributing to the relationships and doing my part with no expectation in return. I believe in doing so, the relationships will become stronger because it always takes two.
