Are you a “Driver” or a “Worker”?
I was at Panera recently and was talking to the cook as he was preparing my egg white, spinach and tomato breakfast sandwich and started some small talk. He said, “Today has not been a bad day.” I continue the conversation and say, “so it’s been busy? He says, “No, slow and I’ve been able to take it easy.” I said, “Well, when it’s busy, time goes by faster.” He said, “I hope it stays like this for the next four hours and I’m out of here.” He handed over my sandwich and I went on my way. As I walked out I was thinking on how different I look at time.
When I look at a clock, I think about and gauge how much more work I could get done in the block of time I have left. He was looking at the least amount of work he could do while he bides his time to leave.
Now, no disrespect to him at all, I am sure he is a solid worker and a great person. He was actually very pleasant to me. I just think there is a clear difference with someone who is a “Driver” as opposed to a “Worker”. A “Driver” is someone who will control their time, maximize it and get the most out of what they’re doing. They look at the clock and say, “I still have one hour left and I could get this done”. A “Worker” looks at the clock and says, “I still have this much time and can’t wait until I leave.”
My thoughts; even if you work for someone you should have the “Driver” mentality because you will eventually be the one leading others. I love the saying, “How you do one thing is a reflection on how you do everything”. This way you are giving it your all no matter what you are doing. That is definitely self mastery. A little wisdom for you…
