Every week I do my best to post something relative to something that has happened to my week such as life lessons I learned, realizations I’ve had, challenges I’ve overcome or even something fun. It is my hope that through my current and past experiences that it will put a little light where there may be darkness, a little inspiration where someone may be struggling or a little laughter when things are tough. It’s not that I am better or know more than others. It is only my personal interpretations through my 37 years of martial arts training and 49 years of life. I am hopeful that people who read these articles that Grandmaster Paul Melella and I write will find value we ought to apply to their lives and share with others.

Last week was a whirlwind of a week coming off our Life Alignment Bootcamp, to a large seminar, to another workshop, teaching classes, a large unexpected surprise, coaching calls, my training and then right into our United Martial Arts Centers retreat. It seems as though it was non-stop and I found myself needing to get out into the woods.

I escaped for a six mile hike and loved every step. Solutions to challenges came to the forefront of my mind because I removed myself from reality. That is one of the secrets to any success I have experienced in my life. When things are tough, I take a walk in the woods. There is a quote I love and believe in, “Enlightenment starts where the pavement ends”. I whole heartedly believe that we as a species are meant to be in the woods, not in concrete boxes filled with electronics and electromagnetic energy. The energy we need to connect with is that of nature and our environment. So, if you are searching for mental clarity, than get outside and tap in to the energy which we we born to connect with. Take a hike, a walk, a mountain bike ride or whatever you need.

Right when I came back from the retreat, I sent my brother a text and said I need to climb a big mountain, which one are we doing? It is those epic climbs where I am mostly connected to nature. Get out and enjoy!
