It is interesting to me why more people don’t have “success coaches” in their lives. If you think about it, we will hire coaches all the time to help our children advance in sports, we will pay for tutoring to advance in school, and many of us will hire personal trainers to help with our health. Countless adults will hire financial advisors to advise them with their finances, but what about all the other areas of their lives? We will hire a coach for ways to help us make more money, get us in shape, and advance in a sport. However, we are hesitant to hire a coach to improve our lives. Even though we know that the most successful people always have someone who coached them along to success.
I have personally never liked the term “Life Coach”. To me, it sounds a little cliché and a well overused term that has been watered down by many. I prefer the term “Success Coach” or “Personal Development Coach”. In any event, having a coach could be a huge game changer for you in terms of being able to live the life you have dreamed of.
Why you may ask? It’s simple. Having someone take an unbiased look at the way you live your life and help you address your personal PCF’s (Problems, concerns and frustrations), help you come up with a plan to overcome them and hold you accountable, is a sure way to self improvement.
Are you sold? Hope not, I am hoping that you are inspired. That is why I came up with five crucial elements that you need to look for to find the “success coach” the is the best fit for you.
1. Clear definition of what success means to you:
This is hugely important because so many people have their own definition of success. A lot of people believe success is determined by the amount of money one has in their bank account or the material things that they own. It is important to have a coach that allows you to come up with your own definition of success and not one based solely on money. Many of the clients we work with come to us because they want to make more money, only to realize that they need to develop multiple areas in their life to achieve success. It is a very powerful life altering realization to come up with your personal definition of success.
2. Wholistic approach:
Once the definition of success is determined it is important that the coach you choose takes a big picture approach to achieving the objectives and not just a singular focus. In other words, where you may want to emphasize a particular area of life you cannot neglect the other areas. Meaningful success is determined by what you as the client want to develop and it is the coaches’ responsibility to guide their client in creating action steps to move forward towards their definition. We have had clients that have felt successful because they made a lot of money, only to realize the other areas of their lives were amiss. It was through coaching where they redefined their meaning of success and improved the big picture of their life, while maintaining the areas they were already excelling in. As one client stated, “I am a Ferrari with three flat tires”. He was excelling in one area of life but neglected the other three that were important to him. A good coach will take a look at your whole life and help you develop in all areas that are important to you.
3. Accountability
This is probably the most important quality a personal coach can do for you. Holding the clients accountable is the greatest gift that we do for our personal clients. As a child, you are accountable to your parents, teachers and coaches. Who are you accountable to as an adult? Maybe a boss or manager when it relates to work, but what about everything else? Who is going to hold you accountable for your health, your relationships, spending quality time with the people you care about, or moving forward towards your personal goals? The answer is most likely no one unless you hire yourself a coach to do so. To me, it is the only way to keep moving forward.
4. Bold but passionate
Empowered Mastery’s (and my best friend) Master Paul Melella said it best when one of his clients explained that he had been through many coaching programs in his life. He expressed that he already had a great deal of knowledge on the subject and was not sure how Paul could help him. To which Paul responded by asking him why he hadn’t put all of his knowledge into action. He then explained to the client that he is being “bold but passionate” to challenge him and get results. Paul and his client to this day joke about that conversation. The point is that the coach cannot be someone who just pacifies and sugar coats things. Your coach should challenge you when you need it, support you when necessary, push you at just the right time, and guide you in the direction of highest achievement.
5. Find the greater purpose in life
Many people go through life doing what they do to earn money to pay the bills to support the lifestyle they choose. Then, before they know it, life has squeaked by lacking a purpose or greater meaning. I believe everyone has been placed on this earth to make a greater contribution to society. I love the quote “The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose.” It is up to the coach to help pull that out of you and help find the greater meaning of your personal life. This is a must! If you read any personal development book or attend any seminar, they will always refer to a deeper meaning. There is no greater experience as a personal development coach to see the lightbulb go off in a client’s mind when they come to the realization that they were put on earth for a greater meaning. It is the most rewarding part of what we do, and we can do it for you as well.
I have to say that I truly have a blessed life. I have the ability to coach and influence people in my martial arts schools as well as professionals through our coaching company Empowered Mastery. It is my greater meaning and why I am on this planet. It is referred to as what we at Empowered Mastery call a Worthy Ideal. I would like to share the worthy ideal that Paul Melella, Rick Wollman, Nick Palumbo and myself hold very close to our hearts.
“To inspire and impact professionals and entrepreneurs to achieve ultimate success personally, professionally, physically and spiritually so they could live a life filled with passion and purpose”
