The Beauty of Respect: A Lesson from Japan

I’ve only been in Japan a few days, and I’m amazed, not just by how clean everything is, but by how intentional and respectful the people are. Every interaction carries a quiet grace. Whether it’s giving directions, serving a meal, or simply acknowledging your presence, there’s a level of care that feels almost sacred.

The bow says it all. It’s not a quick nod; it’s deliberate. When someone holds their bow, eyes down, it’s as if they’re saying, “I see you. I honor you.” That simple gesture reflects a depth of humility and respect that’s woven into the fabric of daily life here.

It made me reflect on how I try to show up in my own world, whether teaching, coaching, or leading. What if we all carried that same sense of respect into our words, actions, and relationships? Imagine how much stronger our connections would be if we led every interaction with presence and appreciation.

In many ways, that’s the essence of Il Il Shin: being better every day through awareness and intentional practice. Respect isn’t just demonstrated; it’s lived and should be embraced in every fiber of our existence. We don’t just “Do”, we need to “Be”.
